One turtle was observed last night. Kalindi was found by Kelly as she was just finishing up her nest. She was located down in Macarthur Park about 1/3 mile from where she was observed 10 days ago - yes, sometimes they return to our survey area! It was really quite a nice and pleasant night to be on the beach.
Tracks from the first Loggerhead of the season on Juno Beach were found at around 11pm. I sort of forgot how small Loggerheads are compared to leatherbacks. Those tracks were tiny! The turtle did not nest, but we expect her to be back sometime tonight. When we find her we will tag, measure and collect a few skin biopsies for genetic and stable isotope analysis. The loggerhead work is a project we are working on with students at the University of Florida and already it has yielded some interesting results. I will post more on the Loggerhead stuff later. Off to bed! Not much sleep this weekend...
